Chop! Chop!

I remember this day very clearly.  I was humbled, I was teary-eyed, and I reeked of onions.  A friend of mine was getting married and some team-mates and I volunteered to help.  I learned very quickly that volunteering to help for an American friend's wedding is much different than helping with an Ethiopian friend's wedding. Thier wedding celebrations last for days and preparation takes even longer. We gathered with the women in her family to start the food prep.  My first task was to clean up the carrots. Sounded simple and I was confident.   I actually love to cook and felt like I could make a decent contribution to the work. However, I learned that my ways aren't really acceptable among most Ethiopian women.

They fired me from carrots.

It was pretty humbling to have this elderly Ethiopian woman show me up at carrot cleaning. They decided I was shaving off too much of the carrot (but inside the foriegner in me was saying "get ALL the dirt off so that these people dont' get sick!").  But they were loosing too much carrot on account of me so they demoted me to onion chopping.  Once again, my onion chopping skills didn't compare to the Ethiopian ladies.  They used these crazy curly knives that I didn't even know how to hold and they were super fast. They laughed at my methods and were amused at my child-like pace.  So, maybe I wasn't that helpful after all, but, apparently I provided plenty of entertainment!

Afar Girl

I love this picture. Isn't she beautiful? I don't know her name, nor do I remember if I had any contact with her or conversation with her. But I have this picture as a memory of this sweet girl who was so excited to have us visit her tribe.  This girl is Afar, and they are by far one of the more interesting people groups I was exposed to while living there.  They are nomadic, Islamic, traditionally very violent, the men wear skirts, they bake their bread in a hole in the ground, and typically the women are topless. (yes, I said topless! These people are the ones you see depicted shirtless in all the souvenir stores) Thankfully most of them covered up while we were there. ;)   But they are a beautiful people and they are in desperate need of the Truth.  Very few Believers are among them, so pray for the work that's being done there.

Today I want to share with you about Kim's blog, The Change Me Crew.  She is raising funds to assist with rennovations for an Orphanage in Ethiopia. She is holding an auction on her website and all donations will go towards making improvements for these children.  You can read more about her story and her sweet family on her blog. So head on over, show her some love, and bid on some neat stuff. You can find this piece up for grabs on her auction this week.

The Lord will fulfill his purpose for me!

"The Lord will fulfill His purpose for me." Psalm 138:8

Don't you just love that promise? I do. No matter what that purpose is, it's HIS pleasure to fulfill it. Love it!

This is an 8x10 canvas with a sage green Africa. The verse is translated in to Amharic on the continent and has a sewn border. I liked this one so much it's my new avatar on Etsy! You can see more pictures of it here.
